Center Step Peony Card

As noted in previous posts, one of my favorite product suites in the Annual Catalog is the Peony Garden Suite.  So when celebrating my mother’s birthday in June, the choice was easy.   The suite was ideal for decorating a  center step peony card to mark the milestone occasion.  Plus, the card fit perfectly in a Whisper White medium envelope. Since the celebrating continued for several weeks, the center step peony card was perfect for her to keep it on display!

Peony Garden Center Step Card

Details:
  • The card base starts with a 4-1/4″ x 11″ piece of Petal Pink cardstock.  For cutting and scoring to create the center step card base, I followed this video by Wendy Cranford.  She uses a wider card but the 1″ cuts on each side of the cardstock and the scoring lines remain the same.
  • To cover the front card panels, select coordinating pages from the Peony Garden Designer Series Paper.  Cut the following sizes: center panel (4-3/8″ x 2-1/8″), 2 side panels (7/8″ x 4-3/8″) , and bottom panel (4-1/4″ x 7/8″).
  • The sentiment on the bottom panel is from the Itty Bitty Birthdays Stamp Set.  Since the phrase “Happy Birthday” is combined on one stamp, use a post-it mask on the word you do not want to stamp with the Gray Granite Classic Stampin’ Pad.  Next, attach a piece of Gray Granite cardstock to an Adhesive Foam Sheet and cut with the Playful Alphabet Dies.  Add to the center of the panel between the sentiment phrase.
  • Now, attach the panels to the card front using Stampin’ Seal or Multipurpose Liquid Adhesive.
  • Use the Peony Dies to cut the flower pieces from Petal Pink cardstock.  Cut the stamen from a scrap of Basic Black cardstock.  Sponge along the edges of the flower pieces with Petal Pink Classic Ink and assemble the peony.
  • With Old Olive Classic Stampin’ Pad, stamp the large stemmed peony onto Whisper White cardstock.  Cut with the coordinating Peony Die.  Color the stem using Old Olive Stampin’ Blends Markers.  Note: you do not need to color the flower since you’ll cover it with the die cut peony flower.  Attach to the center panel using Foam Adhesive Strips.
  • Add the peony flower to the flower stem using Multipurpose Liquid Adhesive covering the peony flower on the stem.
  • Embellish around the flower with Clear Epoxy Droplets and add a small 1/4″ Gray Granite Shimmer Ribbon bow.

There are many variations for creating center step cards.  Just vary the center step width to create a wider card.  Have fun creating a center step card!

Triple Panel Floral Card

The project today is a triple panel floral card.  When I need to make multiple cards of one design, I like to use panels of repeat designs.  The repeat designs can either be stamped images or designer series paper images.  So for this card, the Flowers For Every Season Designer Series Paper provides the repeat floral design.  Notice the texture?  Each of the panels is texture embossed using the Subtle 3D embossing folder.
Triple Panel Floral Card

Recreating the card:
  • Create a card base using Poppy Parade cardstock cut 5-1/2″ x 8-1/2″. Score and fold at 4-1/4″.
  • Cut 3 strips of Just Jade cardstock: 4″ x 1-11/16″.
  • Cut 3 strips of the Flowers for Everything Designer Series Paper: 3-7/8″ x 1-9/16″.
  • Attach the designer series paper to the Just Jade cardstock strips.  Then, texture embellish using the Subtle 3D Embossing Folder.
  • Evenly space the layered strips onto the card base front and attach using Stampin’ Seal Adhesive.
  • Stamp the sentiment from the Meant to Be Stamp Set onto a 2-1/2″ x 1-1/2″ piece of Whisper White cardstock.  Then cut using the Stitched Shapes Dies (2nd smallest oval).
  • Using the 2nd largest oval from the Stitched Shapes Dies, cut a 3-1/4″ x 2-1/4″ piece of Just Jade cardstock.  Next, add the sentiment label using Stampin’ Seal.
  • Add the layered sentiment label to the card front using Stampin’ Dimensionals.
  • Embellish with the Crushed Curry resin dots from the Playing with Patterns Resin Dots.  Then add a Just Jade Ribbon bow.

You can use the triple panel card design for portrait or landscape cards.  Plus, adjusting your sentiment label and adding a few more embellishments enables you many design possibilities.

Coloring Designer Series Paper

In today’s post, I am featuring cards highlighting two methods for coloring Designer Series Paper.  For one of the cards in the July “to go” card class, participants were able to color the background of the Peony Garden Designer Series Paper.  The Peony Garden Designer Series Paper provides perfect designs to color.  For coloring the designer series paper, Stampin’ Blends Markers and Watercolor Pencils can be used.  To ensure a fair comparison of the two methods, Calypso Coral and Granny Apple Green have been chosen.  On both cards, the peony flowers become the feature on the designer series paper by coloring the background and the leaves.

The first card features the Calypso Coral Light and Granny Apple Green Light Stampin’ Blends Markers.  The Stampin’ Blends Markers provide a bright background for the peony flowers on the Designer Series Paper.

Peony Garden Designer Series Paper

The card below uses the Calypso Coral and the Granny Apple Green Watercolor Pencils for shading the background and the leaves.  Since the designer series paper is not designed to watercolor, no water is used.  Instead the watercolor pencils are being used like a coloring pencil.  Peony Garden Designer Series paper

Notice the background using the Watercolor Pencils provides a more subtle color and areas have shading.  This is due to variation in the amount of pressure when coloring with the watercolor pencils.  Note: Due to lighting with my photo, the shading is more pronounced than when actually viewing the card.

TIPS:
  • Color the leaves first.  Once the leaves have color added, it becomes easier to separate the background from the flowers.
  • When coloring with the watercolor pencils, use a small circular coloring motion vs straight line coloring.  This method provides a smoother appearance.
  • Option: Use an eraser and gently erase areas of the watercolor pencil are heaviest.  (Personally, I think the variation in shading looks good.)

Hopefully, I have inspired you to try coloring designer series paper.  Have fun experimenting with different papers and coloring tools!   In addition to coloring the background, you may want to just color specific images.  The possibilities are almost endless!

Many Layered Blossoms

Last week, one of my posts highlighted the Blossoms in Bloom bundle.  Today’s card features the Many Layered Blossoms Dies which are part of the bundle.  With just the dies, you are able to create various floral combinations.  It makes card creating very simple.  Combining the die cut overlay with the die cut of designer series paper and you quickly have the makings of a card!

Many Layered Blossoms

Materials for the Many Layered Blossoms card:
  • Card base: Bumblebee cardstock.
  • Whisper White cardstock: for layer onto card base; for floral overlay die cut and for the sentiment
  •  Artistry Blooms Designer Series Paper: for the floral die cut
  • Stamp Set: Many Mates for sentiment
  • Layering Ovals Dies – for sentiment label
  • Ink: Tuxedo Black Memento Ink Pad
  • Bumblebee 2020-2022 In Color 1/4″ Ribbon
  • Adhesives: Multipurpose Liquid Adhesive, Stampin’ Dimensionals & Stampin’ Seal
Tips:
  • Use a sponge to add the Multipurpose Liquid Adhesive to the back of the floral overlay and then attach to the Artistry Blooms die cut floral layer. OR: attach an Adhesive Sheet to the Whisper White cardstock prior to die cutting.
  • Attach the completed floral piece to the Whisper White layer and wrap ribbon around card before attaching to the card base.
  • Add the stamped sentiment to the card across the ribbon using Stampin’ Dimensionals.

If you enjoy creating floral theme cards, you’ll want to add the Many Layered Blossoms Dies (or the Blossoms in Bloom Bundle) to your crafting supplies!

Creating Design Interest

Do you find yourself challenged creating design interest on cards? Today’s card may just help.  Using a variety of techniques, design interest is being created on the card.  First, notice the Daffodil Delight card base.  By stamping color on color, it creates design interest.  Then, the Misty Moonlight cardstock layer is askew on the card base.  In addition, the Misty Moonlight cardstock is texture embossed.  Next, a piece of designer series paper is cut into a circle and topped with a sentiment banner piece.  That’s a total of five shapes and techniques for creating design interest.  While it took me some time to adapt to adding cardstock askew on card fronts, I must admit it does add visual interest and is a nice change from typical card layering techniques.  Visual Interest

Card Details:
  • Create the card base using a 4-1/4″ x 11″ piece of Daffodil Delight cardstock.  Score at 5-1/2″ and fold.
  • Using Daffodil Delight Classic Stampin’ Pad, stamp the small flowers on the card base front.  The flowers are from the Field of Flowers Stamp Set.
  • Next, cut a piece of Misty Moonlight cardstock 3-3/4″ x 5″.  Texture emboss using the Tasteful Textile 3D Embossing Folder (this is becoming a favorite of mine!).
  • Then, add the Misty Moonlight embossed layer to the card front placing it askew.  After adhering, trim the overhanging cardstock edges.
  • With the Layering Circles Dies, cut a coordinating floral print from the Flowers for Every Season 6″ x 6″ Designer Series Paper.  Add to the Misty Moonlight cardstock layer.  TIP: if you own the retired 2-1/2″ circle punch, use it in lieu of the 2-1/2″ layering circles die especially if you’re short on time!
  • On a 3/4″ strip of Whisper White cardstock, use the Banner Punch to create a banner tail on the right side of the strip. Next, stamp the sentiment using Misty Moonlight Classic Stampin’ Pad.  The sentiment is found in the Lovely You stamp set.  With Stampin’ Dimensionals, add the banner strip to the card front and across the designer series paper circle.  If cardstock overhangs on the left side, trim the cardstock so that it’s even with the side of the card.
  • To finish the card, add a knotted bow to the side of the sentiment.  The knotted bow uses the Daffodil Delight 1/4″ Ruched Ribbon.

Now, it’s your turn to start creating visual interest!  Share in the comments section other ideas.

Whale Done Bundle

Have you seen the Whale of a Time Suite in the Stampin’ Up! Annual Catalog yet?  If not, you need to check it out.  The Whale Done Bundle and the coordinating Whale of a Time Designer Series Paper are part of the suite and make creating cards easy.  The designer series paper with it’s vibrant colors provides a beautiful background to complement stamped images.  But wait, you can also use the coordinating punch to cut a whale from the designer series paper.  If you look closely at my card below, you’ll see the whale is not a stamped image.  Whale Done Bundle

Whale Done Bundle Card Details:
  • Cut a card base 5-1/2″ x 11″ from Balmy Blue cardstock.  Score at 4-1/4″ and fold.
  • For the first layer, use Shaded Spruce cardstock cut 5-3/8″ x 4-1/8″ and attach to the front of the card base.
  • From the Whale of a Time Designer Series Paper, select desired background design and cut 4″ x 5-1/4″.  Attach to the shaded spruce layer on the card.
  • Using the whale pattern of the designer series paper, cut a large whale with the coordinating Whale Builder Punch.
  • Cut a piece of Whisper White cardstock using the Stitched Nested Labels Dies.
  • Then, stamp the sentiment from the Whale Done Stamp Set onto the Whisper White label using Tuxedo Black Memento Ink Pad.  TIP: position ithe sentiment on the left side of the label so whale can overhang label.
  • Attach label to the front of the card using Stampin’ Dimensionals.  Next, add the whale using a Mini Glue Dot on the head area and Mini Stampin’ Dimensionals on the tail section.
  • To complete the card front, embellish by adding Artistry Blooms Adhesive Backed Sequins.

Isn’t this a fun card?!  Grab this bundle and start creating, then share your design with me in the comments section.
