As noted in previous posts, one of my favorite product suites in the Annual Catalog is the Peony Garden Suite. So when celebrating my mother’s birthday in June, the choice was easy. The suite was ideal for decorating a center step peony card to mark the milestone occasion. Plus, the card fit perfectly in a Whisper White medium envelope. Since the celebrating continued for several weeks, the center step peony card was perfect for her to keep it on display!
Details:
The card base starts with a 4-1/4″ x 11″ piece of Petal Pink cardstock. For cutting and scoring to create the center step card base, I followed this video by Wendy Cranford. She uses a wider card but the 1″ cuts on each side of the cardstock and the scoring lines remain the same.
To cover the front card panels, select coordinating pages from the Peony Garden Designer Series Paper. Cut the following sizes: center panel (4-3/8″ x 2-1/8″), 2 side panels (7/8″ x 4-3/8″) , and bottom panel (4-1/4″ x 7/8″).
The sentiment on the bottom panel is from the Itty Bitty Birthdays Stamp Set. Since the phrase “Happy Birthday” is combined on one stamp, use a post-it mask on the word you do not want to stamp with the Gray Granite Classic Stampin’ Pad. Next, attach a piece of Gray Granite cardstock to an Adhesive Foam Sheet and cut with the Playful Alphabet Dies. Add to the center of the panel between the sentiment phrase.
Now, attach the panels to the card front using Stampin’ Seal or Multipurpose Liquid Adhesive.
Use the Peony Dies to cut the flower pieces from Petal Pink cardstock. Cut the stamen from a scrap of Basic Black cardstock. Sponge along the edges of the flower pieces with Petal Pink Classic Ink and assemble the peony.
With Old Olive Classic Stampin’ Pad, stamp the large stemmed peony onto Whisper White cardstock. Cut with the coordinating Peony Die. Color the stem using Old Olive Stampin’ Blends Markers. Note: you do not need to color the flower since you’ll cover it with the die cut peony flower. Attach to the center panel using Foam Adhesive Strips.
Add the peony flower to the flower stem using Multipurpose Liquid Adhesive covering the peony flower on the stem.
Embellish around the flower with Clear Epoxy Droplets and add a small 1/4″ Gray Granite Shimmer Ribbon bow.
There are many variations for creating center step cards. Just vary the center step width to create a wider card. Have fun creating a center step card!

In today’s post, I am featuring cards highlighting two methods for coloring Designer Series Paper. For one of the cards in the July “to go” card class, participants were able to color the background of the Peony Garden Designer Series Paper. The Peony Garden Designer Series Paper provides perfect designs to color. For coloring the designer series paper, Stampin’ Blends Markers and Watercolor Pencils can be used. To ensure a fair comparison of the two methods, Calypso Coral and Granny Apple Green have been chosen. On both cards, the peony flowers become the feature on the designer series paper by coloring the background and the leaves.
The first card features the Calypso Coral Light and Granny Apple Green Light Stampin’ Blends Markers. The Stampin’ Blends Markers provide a bright background for the peony flowers on the Designer Series Paper.
The card below uses the Calypso Coral and the Granny Apple Green Watercolor Pencils for shading the background and the leaves. Since the designer series paper is not designed to watercolor, no water is used. Instead the watercolor pencils are being used like a coloring pencil.
Notice the background using the Watercolor Pencils provides a more subtle color and areas have shading. This is due to variation in the amount of pressure when coloring with the watercolor pencils. Note: Due to lighting with my photo, the shading is more pronounced than when actually viewing the card.
TIPS:
Color the leaves first. Once the leaves have color added, it becomes easier to separate the background from the flowers.
When coloring with the watercolor pencils, use a small circular coloring motion vs straight line coloring. This method provides a smoother appearance.
Option: Use an eraser and gently erase areas of the watercolor pencil are heaviest. (Personally, I think the variation in shading looks good.)
Hopefully, I have inspired you to try coloring designer series paper. Have fun experimenting with different papers and coloring tools! In addition to coloring the background, you may want to just color specific images. The possibilities are almost endless!

A friend recently had a birthday and to celebrate, I sent her a small gift. If you receive my newsletter, you’ll recall the peony birthday card along with instructions for creating the card. As promised, I am sharing the coordinating Peony Gift Box that includes the inspiration for both the box and the birthday card. One of my go-to places for small personal gifts is Bath & Body Works. So after receiving an email showcasing a selection of peony bath gel and lotions, an order was quickly placed. The items coordinate perfectly with products from the Peony Garden Suite Collection.
Project Details:
As you see in the photo, I crafted a box from a 12″ x 12″ Night of Navy cardstock (from the Neutrals 12″ x 12″ cardstock pack) cut to size for the box bottom plus it’s matches the blue on the Bath & Body Works products. For the box top, a piece of the Peony Garden Designer Series Paper is cut to fit the box bottom. For creating boxes, I use the instructions provided by Donna Griffith in her You Tube video, How to Make Your Own Box. Her detailed instructions make it easy to create boxes sized specifically for a project.
After creating the box, use the Peony Dies to cut Blushing Bride cardstock for the flower. Next, sponge each of the pieces for the flower using Melon Mambo Classic Stampin’ Pad before assembling. Tip: When sponging, use a swiping motion with the sponge to drag the ink across the layer. Now, assemble the peony. And to create dimension between the peony layers, tuck Mini Stampin’ Dimensionals between the cardstock layers. Finish the flower by adding the stamen using a mini glue dot. The stamen is die cut from a scrap of Bumblebee cardstock. Notice how the Stampin’ Up! colors match the peony colors on the lotion and gel containers perfectly? For the leaves, cut 3 sets using the Peony Dies. Garden Green cardstock forms the main leaf body and contrasting leaf edges use Old Olive cardstock.
Finishing the Peony Gift Box top:
Next, create a base for the peony label by cutting a piece of Night of Navy cardstock using the Tasteful Labels Dies. Attach a Gold Foil circle cut with the 2-1/4″ circle punch to the Night of Navy label. Finish by arranging the leaves and adding the peony to the label using Mini Glue Dots and Stampin’ Dimensionals. Ribbon is wrapped around the center of the box lid and glued inside the flaps. The Night of Navy ribbon on the project is retired and no longer available but you can substitute a Whisper White Ribbon or color a ribbon with Night of Navy Stampin’ Blends. Add the Peony Label to the box using a strong adhesive such as Stampin’ Seal+. Complete by adding a bow just below the peony on the label. Add to the Night of Navy box bottom and your gift box is complete!
Here are additional views of the box:
It’s so much fun when you find products that coordinate with Stampin’ Up! stamps and papers! Creative ideas abound!
Of course, the box coordinates also with the card…

The new 2020-2021 Annual Catalog from Stampin’ Up! is now “live” and available for product ordering. There are many beautiful new stamp sets, stamp bundles, embellishments and tools available. Plus, the five new In Colors! It’s difficult to decide which items to focus on first. In a couple of my recent posts, I have been able to share a few of the products from my preorder. Today, I am sharing a Stampin’ Up! video that showcases the new Peony Garden Suite. This suite was the first to catch my eye when I was able to preview the catalog. It was not available for preorder so it was placed at the top of my wish list. Once catalog ordering became available on Wednesday, I placed my order with the Peony Garden Suite the first item entered. Like a kid at the holidays, I’m anxiously awaiting delivery!
Check out this beautiful suite of products below…
Isn’t this a beautiful product suite? I can’t decide which is my favorite – the Prized Peony Bundle, the Peony Garden Designer Series Paper or the Dainty Diamonds 3D Embossing Folder! Under Project Materials is the link for the full suite and links for each individual product in the suite.
Fingers Crossed: My order is due for delivery on Monday, so stay tuned. Later next week, I will be featuring products from the Peony Garden Suite.
Check back on Monday as I’ll be sharing a project featuring other new products. Thanks for stopping by today and have a great weekend.
