No Line Watercolor Technique

At the last quarterly Playtime with Paper meeting, team members were able to practice the no line watercolor technique.  It’s a fun technique and during the meeting, I shared helpful tips to remember when using the technique and am sharing them below. For the meeting project, the Nature’s Harvest Stamp Set was used. It has the perfect image to use with this technique.  After coloring, the coordinating Harvest Dies are used to die cut the image.  Additional die cuts provide layers to showcase the colored image.   Hope you’ll give this fun technique a try!

Nature's Harvest: No Line Watercolor Technique

Tips for the no line watercolor technique:
  • Select an image with clean, defined lines (especially when beginning to do this technique).
  • Use a light color for stamping the image – such as Sahara Sand or Crumb Cake (for the project above, Sahara Sand was used)
  • Be sure to stamp off onto a scrap of paper before stamping onto the paper for watercoloring.
  • Fluid 100 Watercolor Paper or Shimmery White Cardstock should be used.
  • The Stamparatus is extremely helpful for stamping the image especially onto watercolor paper.
  • Before adding ink color to section, first dampen the area with your watercolor brush. BE CAREFUL – do not saturate the paper, just dampen it.
  • Work small sections at a time and when moving to a new section, leave an unfinished area between the sections. EX: for this project,  2-3 side by side petals were watercolored, then the adjoining 2-3 petals were skipped. The next section was then colored.  As the areas with the watercolor added started to dry, the skip areas were then colored.  By doing this, the area doesn’t become over saturated which can cause the ink to bleed.
  • Remember – less is more! Start with a small amount of watered down ink and as the image dries, you can add more ink.

Most important tip:  Allow the watercolor image to dry before passing judgement on it.  As the image dries, you’ll be able to view your success!!!

Simple Suite Stampers

Recently I was invited to join the Simple Suite Stampers. You may ask who are the Simple Suite Stampers and what’s it about? The Simple Suite Stampers is a design team of twelve Stampin’ Up! Demonstrators that create monthly tutorials. Each month a suite of products is chosen and each designer creates a simple project featuring items from the suite.  For this month, the Sweet Talk Bundle is the feature.  Even though Valentine’s Day is quickly approaching, the tutorials feature inspiration for using the Sweet Talk Product Suite for different occasions.  It’s easy to change sentiments to highlight the occasion you’re celebrating.

For my project, I opted to create an engagement card.  The Sweet Talk Designer Series Paper is perfect for creating a wide variety of love themed projects.

Materials: (for full list of items used, scroll to Project Materials)
  • Pool Party Cardstock: 5-1/2 x 11 score and fold at 4-1/4″ for card base, 4-1/4″ x 3″ (layering piece), scraps for die cutting small flowers
  • Real Red Cardstock: 3″ x 3″
  • Basic White Cardstock: 3″ x 3/4″
  • Granny Apple Green Cardstock: Scrap for die cutting leaves
  • Designer Series Paper – Sweet Talk: 5-1/4″ x 4″; Stripe 4″ x 2-3/4″
  • Pool Party Sheer Ribbon
Instructions:
  1. Create card base by layering as follows: large heart designer series paper, smaller rectangle of Pool Party Cardstock and on top, the striped Designer Series Paper panel.
  2. Using the Bouquet of Love Hybrid Embossing Folder and heart die, cut and emboss the piece of Real Red Cardstock.
  3. Die cut 3 small flowers from a scrap of Pool Party Cardstock and 2 leaves from Granny Apple Green Cardstock.
  4. Stamp the sentiment from the Love & Happiness Stamp Set onto the strip of Basic White Cardstock using black ink pad and use die to cut shape.
  5. Center heart onto top panel of card. Using Dimensionals add the sentiment across the heart. Layer the flowers and leaves on the left side of the sentiment.

Linda’s Card Class Projects

Today I am sharing two cards from Linda’s card class projects.  Linda is a member of my Playtime with Paper team.  In addition to being on my team, Linda leads her team, the Crafty Herons.  Due to COVID-19 precautions, we are temporarily offering online card classes vs the in person classes.  Participants in the classes purchase the project kits and join in via Zoom for the scheduled class.  So, last week Linda led a group of craft friends through construction of four projects.  Since I could not attend the class, Linda provided project photos.  And, I’m sharing two of the projects with you.  You’ll find the descriptions below each photo.

Ornate Garden CongratulationsCongratulations card

For the project above, the Ornate Garden Designer Series Paper provides a beautiful background.  Using the Ornate Border Dies, the designer series paper is cut before adding it to the Thick Whisper White cardstock base.  Next, cut a strip of Whisper White cardstock using the dies.  It overlays the designer series paper’s cut edge. Use the three flower dies in the set to also cut the flowers from Rococo Rose cardstock.  Then, add some shimmer to the flowers with the Clear Wink of Stella.  When dry, use Mini Glue Dots to add the flowers along the border.  The  sentiment is from the Peaceful Moments Stamp Set.  Stamp “Congratulations” onto the lower portion of the card using Rococo Rose Classic Stampin’ Pad.  Gilded Gems embellish the centers of each flower.  For that little extra touch, emboss the envelope flap using the Ornate Floral 3D Embossing Folder.

Forever Fern Happy Birthday
Forever Fern Birthday Card

To the Thick Whisper White cardstock base, add a 4″ x 5-1/4″ piece of Pretty Peacock cardstock.  Next, add one of the Forever Gold Laser-Cut Specialty Paper rectangles to the Pretty Peacock layer.  Add a 1-1/4″ x 4″ strip of the Forever Greenery Designer Series Paper to the card front (referring to photo for approximate placement).  On a scrap of Whisper White cardstock, stamp the Happy Birthday sentiment from the Peaceful Moments Stamp Set using Pretty Peacock Classic Stampin’ Pad.  Cut the circle using either a 2″ Circle Punch or one of the Layering Circle Dies (keep the sentiment toward the top of the circle).  Select a variety of leaf dies from the Forever Flourishing dies and cut a piece of Just Jade cardstock, Old Olive cardstock and Soft Seafoam cardstock.  Layer the leaves and attach to one another using Mini Glue Dots.  Next, add a Gold Hoop Embellishment to the card and add the sentiment label in the center of the hoop using Stampin’ Dimensionals.  Then, attach the layer of leaves to the lower portion of the sentiment label with adhesive.  Embellish the stem on the leaves with the gold metallic trim from the Forever Greenery Trim Combo Pack.

Thank you to Linda for the photos!  I am having fun completing her four class projects.

Accented Blooms

Do you like to color?  The Accented Blooms set is the perfect stamp for coloring!  Since  graduation season is nearing, Congratulatory cards seem to always be in need.  So, today’s card showcases the Accented Blooms stamp set transformed into a congratulatory card.  Though the stamp set does not include a congratulatory message, it is easy to select a sentiment from another stamp set.  The Congratulations sentiment on this card is from the Lilypad Lake stamp set.  After stamping, the sentiment is cut with the coordinating die to create a banner.   Since the floral stamp resembles a field of wildflowers, a variety of Stampin’ Blends colors are chosen to color the flowers.  Notice the Whisper White edging along the card layer panel?   It is a small touch that adds additional visual interest.  Read the card details below the photo to find out were to find the edging die.

Congratulations using Accented Blooms

Card Details:
  1. Card base is Daffodil Delight cardstock (5-1/2″ x 8-1/2″ score at 4-1/4″ to create a 5-1/2″ x 4-1/4″ card).
  2. Stamp the Accented Blooms bouquet onto a 4″ x 4″ square of Whisper White cardstock using Tuxedo Black Memento Ink.
  3. Color the blooms on using Stampin’ Blends.  The Stampin’ Blends colors for this card are: Light and Dark Daffodil Delight, Dark Mango Melody, Light Balmy Blue, Light and Dark Old Olive, Light Mossy Meadow, Light and Dark Highland Heather, Light and Dark Petal Pink, and Light and Dark Flirty Flamingo.  Since the card base is Daffodil Delight, touches of the Daffodil Delight blends is colored on the centers of each flower.  Remember – blending different colors of the Stampin’ Blends creates visual interest!
  4. With the lace edge die from the Be Mine Stitched Dies, cut two strips to add along the side edges of the 4″ x 4″ panel.  Attach to the back of the panel using desired adhesive.
  5. Use the Tailored Tag Punch to cut a tag from a scrap of Daffodil Delight cardstock.
  6. Stamp the congratulatory sentiment in the Lilypad Lake stamp set using the Tuxedo Black Memento ink onto a scrap of Whisper White cardstock.  Afterwards, cut with the coordinating banner die from Lakeside Dies.
  7. Assemble the card as follows: center and attach panel to card front.  Use Stampin’ Dimensionals to add the Daffodil Delight tag in the tag area of the blooms.  Next, use mini glue dots to attach the Congratulations banner across the Tailored Tag.
  8. Embellish the tag with the Daffodil Delight sequins from the Gingham Gala Adhesive-Backed Sequins package.
Today’s Tips!
  • Mix it up with other stamps to create another design.  The beauty of the Accented Blooms set is the tag area. There are a variety of sentiments that will fit the area. This enables you to utilize more of your stamp sets for a variety of occasions.
  • Look at all of your die pieces to see if there is a die that will add a “little something” to your card.  The lace edge from the Be Mine Stitched Dies is a perfect example.

Remember to check the Last Chance retiring products list.  We’re midway through May and you’ll want to get your favorite products before they are gone!  Plus if you prefer wood mount stamps, order now as they are retiring.
