While planning cards for a special class, I was perusing the Stampin’ Up! Occasions Catalog for inspiration. Since I have not used the Birthday Blooms stamp set lately, I decide to make one of the cards shown in the catalog that highlights the large flower bloom from the set. I did make a few minor changes (different sentiment, changed small splatter pattern) but kept the layout and color scheme the same. The flower is colored using the watercolor technique on the Shimmery White Cardstock. I have used the paper before to watercolor a small image but not for a larger image as I was really unsure if the paper could withstand the water (even though it says it’s for watercoloring). Figured it was time to a try. Wow! it worked wonderfully and unlike normal watercolor paper, the cardstock is smooth not textured and has a nice sheen. I had a blast coloring the flower using the Aqua Painter to glide the stampin’ ink across the image. The shading technique used with alcohol makers was followed to create depth through color variation. Also, note that the image should be stamped with Jet Black Stazon or Archival Basic Black versus using Memento Black (it is water soluble). It was such fun and has become one of my favorite techniques! So stay tuned, I stamped several flowers and plan to watercolor them using a variety of ink colors… I’ll be sharing projects using the flowers in the coming weeks!

Be sure to try watercoloring using the Aqua Painters and Shimmery White Cardstock! I promise you’ll love the results and find it lots of fun!
Did you know? A bone folder is used to crease, score or burnish paper. Though the majority are now made of plastic, they originally were often made from the leg bone of cattle, deer or similar animals.

Hope you all had a nice weekend and that all the mom’s had a great Mother’s Day!
Today’s card share is a simple card to make but yet is elegant. In my opinion, layering white on white creates a classy looking card. Approximately 2/3s of the top card layer is texture embossed with the Lovely Lace Textured Impressions Embossing Folder, thus leaving enough non-embossed card to stamp the sentiment. The card base uses the Whisper White Thick card stock and the embossed layer is the regular Whisper White card stock. The weight of the Whisper White Thick card stock is perfect for a card base. Since I am in need of a thank you card, I chose the sentiment from the Tin of Cards photopolymer stamp set and stamped it using Lost Lagoon ink. (going to miss this color when it retires at month’s end!) The Botanical Builder Framelits Dies was used to cut the flower and leaves. The touch of color by adding the flower elevates the card…though I must say, just the embossed white with a stamped sentiment looked nice too! The edges of the flower were sponged with Lost Lagoon ink to add additional dimension. The Lost Lagoon ribbon is discontinued and can be omitted but some substitutions include white ribbon colored with the desired ink color or adding a strip of washi tape.

To keep the flower petals lifted, a stampin’ dimensional was cut into quarters and each piece was placed near each petal base (photo is below).

This Sunday we celebrate Mother’s Day and since my mom has received the card made for her, I can now share it with you. This year, I decided to make a drapery style card and since one of my favorite Designer Series Papers is Birthday Bouquet, I knew that it was the one that would be used for the card. The cup of tea (Cups & Kettles Framelits Dies) is a reminder for my mom to sit back, relax and know that lots of love is being sent her way. The interior of the card was stamped using the sentiment from the May Paper Pumpkin kit. I thought the style of the flowers in the sentiment closely matched those in the designer paper…just colored them with the matching Stampin’ Write Markers. Not only does Paper Pumpkin have cute projects but the stamps in the kits have been great for use on a variety of projects.

My mom called to say that she loved the card…I just hope she takes my advice to enjoy the day!
Take note that if you wish to make projects using the Birthday Bouquet Designer Series Paper and A Nice Cuppa Stamp set, these items are on the retiring list and will not be available after May 31. The Cups & Kettles Framelits Dies have sold out and are no longer available.
To all mothers – Have a Happy Mother’s Day!
