While planning cards for a special class, I was perusing the Stampin’ Up! Occasions Catalog for inspiration.  Since I have not used the Birthday Blooms stamp set lately, I decide to make one of the cards shown in the catalog that highlights the large flower bloom from the set.  I did make a few minor changes (different sentiment, changed small splatter pattern) but kept the layout and color scheme the same. The flower is colored using the watercolor technique on the Shimmery White Cardstock.  I have used the paper before to watercolor a small image but not for a larger image as I was really unsure if the paper could withstand the water (even though it says it’s for watercoloring).  Figured it was time to a try.  Wow!  it worked wonderfully and unlike normal watercolor paper, the cardstock is smooth not textured and has a nice sheen.  I had a blast coloring the flower using the Aqua Painter to glide the stampin’ ink across the image.  The shading technique used with alcohol makers was followed to create depth through color variation.  Also, note that the image should be stamped with Jet Black Stazon or Archival Basic Black versus  using Memento Black (it is water soluble).   It was such fun and has become one of my favorite techniques!   So stay tuned, I stamped several flowers and plan to watercolor them using a variety of ink colors… I’ll be sharing projects using the flowers in the coming weeks!

Be sure to try watercoloring using the Aqua Painters and Shimmery White Cardstock!  I promise you’ll love the results and find it lots of fun!
Did you know?  A bone folder is used to crease, score or burnish paper.  Though the majority are now made of plastic, they originally were often made from the leg bone of cattle, deer or similar animals.
