Can you believe it’s August! I know time seems to be flying by. Even though it’s August, I’m still sharing cards from the July card class featuring the Zany Zoo Bundle. This week’s card is a Zany Zoo Birthday Card. The whimsical card is appropriate for all ages but would be especially good for those hard to create preteen/teen cards. At least, for me those are the ages that challenge me when cardmaking. As in my last post featuring the Zany Zoo Bundle, the coordinating Zoo Crew Designer Series Paper is used for the characters. And since the turtle has the microphone (singing Happy Birthday), the Merry Melody 3D embossing folder creates a perfect base for the singer and his dancers. Below you’ll find cut dimensions and a video to help you recreate this fun card.
It’s A Zany Zoo Birthday Card Cut Dimensions:
Lemon Lime Twist Cardstock: 8-1/2″ x 5-1/2″ (score/fold at 4-1/4″ for card base)
Basic Black Cardstock: 5-3/8″ x 4-1/8″ (layering panel); scrap (die cut)
Basic White Cardstock: (2) 5-1/4″ x 4″ (embossing & card interior); scrap (sentiment)
Zoo Crew Designer Series Paper: fussy cutting & die cutting

The fun characters on this card make me smile!

Today’s colorful card sends Zesty Birthday wishes using the Sweet Citrus Stamp Set and coordinating hybrid embossing folder/dies set. The hybrid embossing folder with the coordinating dies helps create cards that look complicated but really aren’t complicated at all. The embossing folder/die combo does all the hard work! The card is one created in a previous card class and the designer series paper background has since been discontinued. However, you can easily substitute with another paper or stamp and create your own background paper if the paper. Have fun creating this Sweet Citrus Zesty Birthday card!
FYI…this is the perfect card to accompany a drink kit for the margarita lover! 🙂

Today’s card features a fun fold. It’s a Dutch door birthday card featuring the Happiness Abounds Bundle and the Hues of Happiness Designer Series Paper. The Hues of Happiness Designer Series Paper is gorgeous! Best of all, focal flowers on the front panel are easily cut using the coordinating Blossoming Happiness dies. Participants in the recent Stamp-a-Stack had fun making three of these cards.
How do you create a Dutch door card? Start with your card base (4-1/4″ x 11″) and score at 5-1/2″. Next, cut the front panel in half at 2-1/8″ and then trim along the fold seam from the top to intersect and remove the top piece. In the photo below, you can see the decorated panel and card interior.
Hues of Happiness Dutch Door Birthday Card Materials & Measurements:
Happiness Abounds Bundle
Coastal Cabana Card Base: 4-1/4″ x 11″ (score/cut as noted above)
Hues of Happiness Designer Series Paper: 5-1/4″ x 2-1/4″ (interior panel); die cut 3 of the large flowers and 2 smaller flowers from designer paper
Basic White Cardstock: 5-1/4″ x 4″ (interior panel); 2″ x 5-1/4″ (die cut with Blossoming Happiness panel die); 1/2″ x 3-1/2″ (for sentiment); scrap to stamp/die cut leaves
Tuxedo Black Memento Ink Pad
Mossy Meadow Classic Stampin’ Pad
Mossy Meadow Stampin’ Blends
Brushed Brass Butterflies
White Baker’s Twine
And for embellishing the envelope, stamp with Coastal Cabana ink and color using the Pool Party Stampin’ Blends.
With the Hues of Happiness Designer Series Paper, there are many colors of the spectacular flowers. So you’ll be able to create cards in a variety of pink, yellow, purple and blue hues.

In today’s post, I am featuring cards highlighting two methods for coloring Designer Series Paper. For one of the cards in the July “to go” card class, participants were able to color the background of the Peony Garden Designer Series Paper. The Peony Garden Designer Series Paper provides perfect designs to color. For coloring the designer series paper, Stampin’ Blends Markers and Watercolor Pencils can be used. To ensure a fair comparison of the two methods, Calypso Coral and Granny Apple Green have been chosen. On both cards, the peony flowers become the feature on the designer series paper by coloring the background and the leaves.
The first card features the Calypso Coral Light and Granny Apple Green Light Stampin’ Blends Markers. The Stampin’ Blends Markers provide a bright background for the peony flowers on the Designer Series Paper.
The card below uses the Calypso Coral and the Granny Apple Green Watercolor Pencils for shading the background and the leaves. Since the designer series paper is not designed to watercolor, no water is used. Instead the watercolor pencils are being used like a coloring pencil.
Notice the background using the Watercolor Pencils provides a more subtle color and areas have shading. This is due to variation in the amount of pressure when coloring with the watercolor pencils. Note: Due to lighting with my photo, the shading is more pronounced than when actually viewing the card.
TIPS:
Color the leaves first. Once the leaves have color added, it becomes easier to separate the background from the flowers.
When coloring with the watercolor pencils, use a small circular coloring motion vs straight line coloring. This method provides a smoother appearance.
Option: Use an eraser and gently erase areas of the watercolor pencil are heaviest. (Personally, I think the variation in shading looks good.)
Hopefully, I have inspired you to try coloring designer series paper. Have fun experimenting with different papers and coloring tools! In addition to coloring the background, you may want to just color specific images. The possibilities are almost endless!
